USDA-Eligible Areas in Louisiana

Most of Louisiana by land area is USDA-eligible. The programme is designed for rural and small-town markets, and outside the New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Lafayette cores much of the state qualifies.

Area typeTypical eligibility
Rural parishesGenerally eligible throughout
Small towns and parish seatsOften eligible, depending on population
Suburban fringe of the larger metrosMixed — eligibility can change street by street
New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Lafayette coresGenerally not eligible

Check the address, not the parish. USDA eligibility is drawn on a map and a single town can be split down the middle. Verify the specific property with the USDA property eligibility tool. USDA’s own note: final determination of property eligibility is made by Rural Development on a complete application.

Louisiana USDA Income Limits

Louisiana’s USDA income limits are uniform. Every parish and every metro area in the state carries the same figures for FY2026.

Household sizeModerate income limit
1–4 person$122,800
5–8 person$162,100

These are the FY2026 adjusted income limits, effective July 13, 2026, and they apply in all 64 parishes and in every Louisiana MSA — New Orleans-Metairie, Baton Rouge, Shreveport-Bossier City, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Houma, Monroe, Alexandria, Hammond and Slidell-Mandeville-Covington alike. For households over eight people, USDA adds 8% of the four-person limit per additional person. Source: USDA Rural Development income limits.

Louisiana USDA loan FAQs

What is the USDA income limit in Louisiana?
$122,800 for a one- to four-person household and $162,100 for five to eight, effective July 13, 2026. Unusually, the figures are identical in every Louisiana parish and every metro area, so there is no parish-level variation to look up.
Is there a USDA loan limit in Louisiana?
No. The Guaranteed programme publishes no maximum purchase price and no dollar cap on loan size. What you can borrow is set by the appraised value and by the income test. Dollar figures presented elsewhere as USDA loan limits belong to the separate Direct programme.
How do I know if a Louisiana address is USDA-eligible?
Check the specific address on USDA’s property eligibility map, not the parish. Eligibility is drawn geographically and a single town can be split, so two houses on the same road can get different answers. Rural Development makes the final determination on a complete application.
What credit score do I need for a USDA loan in Louisiana?
640 is the threshold for USDA’s automated underwriting system. It is not a programme floor, and a lower score can still work through manual underwriting, though fewer lenders will take it on.
What fees does a USDA loan charge instead of mortgage insurance?
An upfront guarantee fee of 1% of the loan amount, usually financed into the loan, and an annual fee of 0.35% of the average scheduled unpaid principal balance. Both are lower than comparable FHA mortgage insurance.
